How to prepare the tracks for a perfect mastering?Mixing in the goal is the pursuit of sound and paste the right balance between the frequencies and dynamics of the recorded tracks, so it is not necessary to achieve the output volume of a disc already burned.
Peak levels of -6 to (Max) -4.5 dBFS are perfect, so do not normalize or use a limiter on the master. Indicate any special requests of Fade In\Fade Out and Crossfade between the songs. Contrary to what we read about, there are many things that you can not truly fix in the mastering stage. Surely mastering can minimize\disguise some mistakes made in the mix, but it is often best and easiest to reopen and edit the mix. Read carefully the following guidelines.
When you print the final mix, pay special attention to the following rules: - Make sure that the peak of the master track of your mix is between -6 dBFS and (Max) -4.5 dBFS, in order to leave enough space\headroom to add the right amount of volume and "throw up!" - Ensure that the individual tracks don't go in "Clipping". In these cases, lower the volume of the individual tracks in the mix. - If the master track exceeds the peak point, not lower the master volume, but that of the individual tracks in the mix. - Ensure that the Mix Master Meter never goes red... - Listen and check the final mix through headphones at a low level to be safe and avoid any distortions, "Clicks" and "Glitch" due to editing or clipping. - Do not try to maximize the appearance of the loudness during the mix. This is one of the most common mistakes. If the mix fails to live up to commercial productions in terms of loudness, the reason is very simple: the productions with which you are making reference\confrontation have already undergone a process of mastering, your song not! - Try to emphasize (or not to compromise too) transients and the definition phase of mixing. The definition and the right balance of Voices, Bass, Kick and Snare helps a lot to get to acceptable levels of loudness with little processing in the mastering stage. - IMPORTANT! You have to be happy 100% of your mix! The mix you have to like. If sent to the mastering stage a mix that you are not very satisfied, then most likely there will come a mastering of which will not be 100% happy. Try to work the mix until You're satisfied with your end result. - The master channel must be absolutely "clean", without effects and\or processors or worse, automations. Automations make them in the mix, the individual tracks! - Effects: Please, do not add any effect when exporting the file. - Try to avoid putting processors on the bus master, because it could jeopardize the process of mastering. - If you think it is vital to leave a multiband or a compressor (such as "color") on the master bus output, send two versions: A "Compressed" version and a "clean" version. - If possible, avoid compressing your mix excessively, stay at a level of about -15dBFS in RMS and -6\-4.5 dBFS peak. - Remember that the low frequencies are the main cause of raising the RMS. - Remember, every project is different!
